Stout Cast Iron Skillet Irish Soda Bread

This simple soda bread recipe is even better in a cast iron skillet baked on the Hasty Bake! The charcoal flavor really compliments the Guinness stout and rye flavors. This is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day for obvious reasons!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 1/2 cups rye flour
  • 1 1/4 self-rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/3 cup butter, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 cup stout beer
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Prepare Hasty-Bake for baking at 400 degrees
  2. Rub cast iron skillet with butter
  3. Sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl, except for the brown sugar
  4. Cut in the chopped butter
  5. Stir the brown sugar in with he flours and butter
  6. Make a well in the center
  7. n a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, stout beer, and egg. Add to the well and stir until dough forms
  8. Kneed gently on a lightly floured surface until smooth
  9. Form dough into a round ball and place in buttered cast iron skillet
  10. With a sharp knife, cut a cross into the top of the dough
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden and hollow sounding when tapped on the top
  12. Irish soda bread is best if served the same day

Irish soda bread has only four ingredient.
Flour (low protein))
Salt
Baking Soda
Buttermilk

It is an insult to presume that every Irish dish has to have Alcohol of any sort in it.
